Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

Across the river from Buenos Aires sits Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay's oldest city. Its Barrio Histórico (Old Town) is a World Heritage Site.

The river upon which the city sits, Río de la Plata, is the widest in the world. It looks almost like an ocean — except that from some points within Colonia, you can faintly see the tall buildings of Buenos Aires on the other side. Bathers lounge on the sandy river bank.

Quiet, clean, small, and beautiful, Colonia is a pleasant place to spend one or two days.
